The Childs Family

A work in progress.

Our ancestry has been traced back to the 1600's to Richard, the father of Hugh Childs and Mary Hicks, farmers from Courtenay, Berkshire, England.  Our family has its roots deeply embedded in agriculture, a tradition carried on today by several of Hugh's great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren.  Courtney, or Sutton Courtenay, as it is known today, is a small village in the county of Oxfordshire, located in South East England.  A second village of interest is Wantage, Berkshire, England, the birthplace of William Childs II and Joseph Childs.  Our immediate lineage is traced to Dawn township and a small farmhouse that still sits on the family property, the one-time home of Clinton and Mary Childs, the parents of Morris, Ernest, Harold, Evelyn (Eves), Don, Helen (Babcock), Marion (Smith) and Gordon.

The Childs Family Crest

Our ancestry has been traced back to Richard Childs, the father of Hugh Childs. Hugh Childs and his wife, Mary Hicks, were farmers from Courtenay, Berkshire, England. Our family has its roots deeply imbedded in agriculture; a tradition carried on today by several of Hugh's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren.

Courtenay, or Sutton Courtenay as it is known today is a small village in the county of Oxfordshire, located in the Southeast England region.

Sutton Bridge is a road bridge across the River Thames near the village of Sutton CourtenayOxfordshire, England. It is a stone structure built in 1807 with three arches over the main river and two smaller ones across the flood plain

Sutton Courtenay is a village and civil parish on the River Thames 2 miles (3 km) south of Abingdon-on-Thames and 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Didcot. Historically part of Berkshire, it has been administered as part of Oxfordshire since the 1974 boundary changes. The 2011 census recorded the parish's population as 2,421. Sutton Courtenay is home to some important structures, such as The Abbey, the Manor HouseAll Saints' Church, a twelfth-century Norman hall, the Sutton Bridge, and Didcot power station.

The All-Saints Church is the burial site of Prime Minister Herbert Asquith, and George Orwell. Asquith had originally built his summer home in Sutton Courtenay to escape the rigors of political life. Helena Bonham Carter, who is the great, great granddaughter of Asquith, recently moved to the village along with her director husband, Tim Burton.

A second village of interest to our family is the birthplace of William Childs II and Joseph Childs; that being Wantage, Berkshire, England.

Wantage, located in the Vale of White Horse District, is the birthplace of King Alfred the Great, born in Wantage in the year 849.

Berkshire is a county in England, known as the Royal County of Berkshire because of the presence of Windsor Castle. Realignment to the area saw many changes to the county in 1974. Wantage, originally a member of Berkshire County became part of Oxfordshire.  Berkshire was the scene of many battles throughout history including the Battle of Reading, the Battle of Ashdown, and the Battle of Englefield.

Amy Elworthy was the daughter of George Elworthy (1773-1839) and Amy Adams (????1807) . The couple was married in East Allington, Devon on January 8, 1798.

Joseph and Mary were joined in marriage on November 6, 1855 in Barton, Ontario

Joseph was married at age 20 to Phobe Harris. She died one year later. Joseph came from England and lived on the Childs Family farm on the 12th Concession of Dawn Twp. He was buried in the Butler Cemetary which is located outside of Florence, Ontario. It is a small cemetery, built on a large hill adjacent the Sydenham River. The following is the obituary, written by R.C. Burton after Joseph's death.

CHILDS - On the evening of April 18, 1902, Brother Joseph Childs bade adieu to the family of God on earth, and departed to join the family of God in heaven. He was born in Berkshire England on December 13, 1832. When, at the age of three, he and his parents set sail for Canada, and settled in Ontario, in the village of Barton, near Hamilton. He was born the second time when nineteen years old, while attending revival service conducted by a New Connexion minister at Lakeside chapel and became a member of that church. He was united in marriage to Phoebe Harris, at the age of twenty, but one year after the union, she was taken from him by death. On November 6, 1855, Mary Sparks became his wife. Soon after their marriage they moved to the township of Dawn, county of Lambton, and united with the Methodist Church at the Huff's appointment, where he remained until God took him to himself. He served the church as class leader, church trustee, and Sunday school superintendent for many years. At the time his health failed, some five or six years before his death, and for twenty or thirty years previous, he was a circuit steward, and the writer is credibly informed that during the many years of stewardship, he did not once report a deficiency for ministerial support from his appointment. If, at the time of the quarterly meeting, the people had not contributed enough to meet their apportionment, he and his brother steward made up the deficiency. For many years Brother Childs has been one of the pillars of the Methodist church on the Florence circuit. Four of his boys- Melvin, Reuben, Charles and Francis- bore their father's body to its last resting place. These, with the widow and four other members of the family - Henry and Mrs. J. Bloom of Dawn township, Mrs. A. McCutheon of Thorndale, and Mrs. J. Lendon of Wallaceburg - mourn their loss. Before his death he had the happy satisfaction of seeing his whole family, with the exception of two boys, savingly converted and members of the Methodist Church.

R.C. Burton

The obituary states that Joseph was born in 1832. His tombstone reads 1831.

It was mentioned in a subsequent article that Joseph was a man of many good qualities, upright, honourable and a kind neighbour. The funeral was held at the family home. Seventytwo rigs followed the remains to the cemetery.
